Children's Summer Workshops - 2008

                                     

Workshops are designed as fun learning experiences for children entering 5K-5th grades; limited to twenty children per workshop unless otherwise specified. Teachers are state certified and/or otherwise qualified.  Pre-registration is required. Snacks and an Earth Creations T-shirt included with each child’s registration.

Registration begins March 3 for Members of The Gardens and March 17 for non-members.

FEES:

Morning Sessions (9-11:30 a.m.)

$100 non-members/$80 Members  

                    

Afternoon Sessions (1-3:30 p.m.)

$90 non-members/$72 Members

               

Members (Hydrangea “Family” level and above) receive 20% discount.

                  

Refund/Cancellation Policy: Refunds (minus $20 processing fee) given if notification of cancellation is received at least 15 business days prior to class start date. No refunds will be given if requested less than 15 business days prior to class start date. $15 processing fee charged for any class transfers. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to lack of participation.

Art & Yoga Camp: Stretch your Creativity

July 7-11

This workshop is FULL

For children entering 5K-2nd grade

Team Instructors: Hilary Moreno, Artist & Susanna Whitsett, AFAA certified Group Fitness Instructor, specialty training in Yoga and Pilates

Let your child stretch their creativity, imagination, and body at our new Art & Yoga Camp. Facilitated by artist Hilary Moreno and yoga instructor, Susanna Whitsett, this combination camp will allow children to explore color, texture, shape, movement, sound, and silence. In addition, children’s literature, walks through The Gardens, and take-home projects will inform the daily themes. Parents are invited to attend a special art exhibition and parent/child yoga class on the final day of camp.

                 

Yoga Friends

July 14-18

Both AM and PM sessions for this workshop are FULL

Instructor: Susanna Whitsett, AFAA certified Group Fitness Instructor with specialty training in Yoga and Pilates.

Susanna is the only person in Alabama trained in the Los Angeles-based program, Yoga Ed ™, a program which seeks to promote lifetime health and wellness in children and youth through the practice and study of yoga.

Bend & stretch, laugh & learn, create & rest with the new Yoga Friends workshop at The Gardens! This workshop will center around yoga postures, games, and breathing techniques while incorporating several avenues of learning including art, singing, and literature. This program is designed to encourage and empower young people to be physically active, creative, and have fun through movement. Yoga Friends may promote concentration, physical fitness, confidence, self-awareness, creativity, social responsibility, and just PLAIN FUN!  Daily themes are designed around nature, the environment, seasons, the growth process, and foods and foliage of the earth. Children will enjoy a healthy snack and create take-home projects that illustrate the theme of the day.

                           

Growing Gardeners

July 14-18

For children entering 3rd-5th grade

Instructor: Sandy Swindall, BA Psychology, MA Elementary Education

Become one of the unique few to get behind the scenes to plant in a Garden at the BBG! We’ll adopt our own area in the Bruno Vegetable Garden to plant and care for during the week. Design a plan for your own miniature windowsill vegetable garden and plant to take home and care for during the summer. Discover tasty snacks you can make from the plants you can grow. Take home crafts include designing a mosaic memory stepping stone using Phyllis’ No Mess Cake Mix Method © 2006.

Digging, Planting, Wiggling, Exploring

July 21-25

For children entering 5K-2nd grade

AM Session is FULL

Instructor: Amy Moore, BS Early Childhood Education, MA Early Childhood Education

Do you like to wiggle, waggle, and dig in the soil? Meet other creatures who wiggle too, and help the earth while doing so. We’ll explore the wonder of “wigglers” and the magic of plants. Plant your own seeds in pots you’ll paint to take home and care for as they grow along with you. We’ll explore a different Garden every day, make nature treasures, and keep our eyes open as we look up close at some of the most amazing plants in The Gardens along with discovering many creatures such as birds, frogs, fish, and insects.

Lavender and Lemonade: A Summer Adventure

July 21-25

For children entering 3rd-5th grade

Instructor: Donna Long, BS Elementary Education

Let your creativity and flair for flavor soar as you join this adventure at The Gardens! We’ll plant a variety of herbs to take home, discover many herbs growing in the Herb Garden, and even unravel some plant and seed mysteries.  Cool off with lavender lemonade, mint chocolate chip ice cream, and learn to make a favorite: cheese bread with herbs. Creative projects include making paper scented and decorated with herbs!
