With winter soon upon us, there is no better time to learn your backyard birds and how to attract them to your landscape! Winter’s onset means that the familiar songbirds of summer yield to a whole new suite of winter visitors. Mixed flocks of chickadees and titmice are joined by finches, kinglets, and siskins, while sapsuckers reappear and resume their hole-drilling ways. This program will consist of a bird walk through the Gardens, where participants will learn to identify birds by their field marks. Special attention will be given to identifying and attracting newly-arrived winter birds.

About the instructor: Greg Harber is an active member of Alabama Audubon and currently serves as chairman of their Field Trips committee. He has taught birding classes for Alabama Audubon and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens over the years. The Gardens is one of his favorite places to look for birds.

In accordance with the statewide mask mandate, all participants in any outdoor programs will be required to maintain a minimum distance of six feet from any person from another household whenever possible, all participants over the age of six will be required to wear masks (subject to exceptions outlined by the mandate), and masks will be encouraged for participants under the age of six if possible.

Refunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. (You are always welcome to send another person under your registration if you cannot attend.) Transfers may be made to programs of equal value at no additional fee. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to lack of participation or other unforeseen circumstances. Please note that programs are held rain or shine; in extreme weather conditions, programs may be canceled for your safety and the safety of staff and volunteers. If we cancel a program for any of these reasons, we will issue a full refund.
