SUMMARY:Oak Mountain Sandstone Glade Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Talk: Dale Sievert\n\n\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Hodges Room\n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin naturalist Michelle Reynolds for a guided hike across the rocky ridges of Double Oak Mountain\, dotted with sandstone glades\, grassy knolls\, longleaf pine forests\, thickets and oak groves. Participants will have exclusive access to a section of the park closed to the public. \n\n\n\nA glade is an open area where bedrock lies at or near the surface\, creating thin\, rocky soils that make it difficult for trees and shrubs to take root. These distinctive natural habitats support rare and unique plant communities that have adapted to thrive in these challenging conditions. \n\n\n\nWe will meet in the Peavine Falls Parking Lot at Oak Mountain State Park for easy access. Wear closed-toed shoes to traverse the sandy\, craggy path. Entrance fees to the park are $5 per adult\, $2 per senior (ages 62 and up). Pay with cash or card at the gate. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Talk: Dale Sievert\n\n\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Hodges Room\n \n \n \n\n\n\nLearn how to preserve your late-summer fig harvest through water-bath canning with Food Safety and Quality Extension Agent Emily Ferko. Participants will leave with a delicious jar of fresh fig-strawberry preserves. \n\n\n\nGrowers have cultivated and enjoyed the edible fig (Ficus carica)\, native to the Mediterranean\, for centuries. In Central Alabama\, fig season extends from July through September. Because figs ripen on the tree and spoil quickly\, this is the perfect time to preserve their fruity goodness! *Supply fee included. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Talk: Dale Sievert\n\n\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Hodges Room\n \n \n \n\n\n\n Landscaping with trees and woody shrubs requires planning\, patience\, and an understanding of how plants grow over time\, some taking many years to reach their full beauty and impact. Join Bob Koons\, a familiar face both in the Kaul Wildflower Garden and at our plant sales\, as he discusses the selection\, environmental needs\, siting\, planting\, and maintenance of trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to bring two or three photos of their yard for small group work. This is a chance to gain inspiration and practical guidance for your own landscape and to get a sneak peak of what will be available at our Fall Plant Sale! \n\n\n\nInstructor: Robert (Bob) Koons\n\n\n\nBob Koons has been a volunteer with Birmingham Botanical Gardens for nearly 10 years. Applying his background in architecture and love for the environment\, he has helped with multiple spaces such as the Japanese Garden and Kaul Wildflower Garden\, even creating a map of the many native plant species there. Passionate about educating people on plants and landscape design\, he has been leading the Trees and Shrubs volunteer growing group for the spring and fall plant sales since 2019. \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nBecome a Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\n\n\n\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. Think again! Learn how to grow fresh veggies in any sunny spot—from suburban gardens to patios and balconies. Advanced Master Gardener Karen Mitchell will discuss how to choose the best vegetables for your space and inspire you with easy\, rewarding options for a spring and summer garden. Perfect for beginners and small-space gardeners. \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\nInstructor: Karen Mitchell\n\n\n\nKaren Mitchell retired from AT&T in 2008 after 31 years. She was certified as a Master Gardener in 2009\, and her first project was spearheading the initial planting of the Hand in Hand Children’s Garden at United Ability of Birmingham. She is very interested in growing vegetables (where sun permits) in small spaces\, in raised beds\, or any container she deems fit. In past years\, Karen chaired the vegetable booth at the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale\, and deems herself a vegetable gardening evangelist. Karen also loves hydrangeas and is the past president of the Alabama Hydrangea Society. Concerns for watering hydrangeas and other plants during drought motivated her to install hose-end irrigation tubing with adjustable emitters to water plants at their base. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
