SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dale Sievert
DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Talk: Dale Sievert\n\n\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Hodges Room\n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin author and gardener Dale Sievert as he explores the long and fascinating history of stumperies in his book Stumperies: The Afterlife of Trees. The earliest recorded stumperies\, or root gardens\, emerged during the “Golden Years” of mid-Victorian England\, when advancements in industry and technology fueled economic growth\, trade\, and culture. Although the stump garden craze of Victorian England waned by the end of the nineteenth century\, stumperies continued to evolve and in recent decades the form has experienced a remarkable resurgence. The modern stumpery garden is increasingly relevant to contemporary discussions of garden design\, horticulture\, ecology\, and environmental conservation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. DESCRIPTION:An Afternoon in Toshinan\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Talk: Dale Sievert\n\n\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Hodges Room\n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Gardens again extends a rare invitation to a tea ceremony inside Toshinan\, one of the most authentic Japanese teahouses outside of Japan. Savor a bowl of tea with tea-hosts Ritsuko Asano and Josh Haynes\, along with members of the Urasenke Association of Birmingham. Chado\, or the way of tea\, expresses hospitality and warmth toward guests and strangers and forms an integral part of Japanese culture\, centered on the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha. \n\n\n\nIn keeping with cultural tradition\, visitors must follow traditional Japanese practices when entering Toshinan. Please wear new white socks\, since the tea house does not permit shoes\, and skip perfume\, cologne and jewelry\, including facial piercings and rings. You will sit on your knees or cross-legged for the ceremony\, so dress comfortably; we will provide stools if needed. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Visual artist and teacher David West will guide participants through “deep looking” exercises designed to sharpen their ability to see and understand natural subjects. The class opens with a brief introduction to key observational drawing concepts\, then moves into hands-on drawing exercises\, supportive feedback\, and group discussion throughout the session. No prior drawing experience is necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to look closely. \n\n\n\n*The fee includes drawing materials. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $10\n |\n Nonmembers: $15\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
