SUMMARY:Constructing Bamboo Fences and Screens
DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrawing to Know: Strategies for Seeing and Recording the World Around You\n\n\n \n \n Instructor\n \n David West\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Exploration Classroom\n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe bamboo fencing and screens in our Japanese Gardens model ancient techniques that artisans have practiced for hundreds of years. In this workshop\, Japanese Garden Senior Horticulturist Julia Adams demonstrates different types of fence and screen making\, and participants will get hands-on experience with the Yotsume-gaki method of fence making\, along with traditional knot-tying techniques. \n\n\n\nSome methods have evolved — such as using pressure-treated pine in fence posts — but Julia stays true to the original designs. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $50\n |\n Nonmembers: $55\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Thank you for your support! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Become a Member\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\n\n\n\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. (You are always welcome to send another person under your registration if you cannot attend.) Transfers may be made to programs of equal value at no additional fee. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to lack of participation or other unforeseen circumstances. Please note that programs are held rain or shine; in extreme weather conditions\, programs may be canceled for your safety and the safety of staff and volunteers. If we cancel a program for any of these reasons\, we will issue a full refund.

SUMMARY:Drawing to Know: Strategies for Seeing and Recording the World Around You
DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrawing to Know: Strategies for Seeing and Recording the World Around You\n\n\n \n \n Instructor\n \n David West\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Exploration Classroom\n \n \n \n\n\n\nDevelop your observation skills through the practice of drawing from nature. Visual artist and teacher David West will guide participants through “deep looking” exercises designed to sharpen their ability to see and understand natural subjects. The class opens with a brief introduction to key observational drawing concepts\, then moves into hands-on drawing exercises\, supportive feedback\, and group discussion throughout the session. No prior drawing experience is necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to look closely. \n\n\n\n*The fee includes drawing materials. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $50\n |\n Nonmembers: $55\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
