SUMMARY:Landscape Foundations: Selecting and Siting Trees and Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrowing Microgreens: From Seed to Plate\n\n\n \n \n Instructor\n \n Janell Diggs\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Exploration Classroom\n \n \n \n\n\n\n Landscaping with trees and woody shrubs requires planning\, patience\, and an understanding of how plants grow over time\, some taking many years to reach their full beauty and impact. Join Bob Koons\, a familiar face both in the Kaul Wildflower Garden and at our plant sales\, as he discusses the selection\, environmental needs\, siting\, planting\, and maintenance of trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to bring two or three photos of their yard for small group work. This is a chance to gain inspiration and practical guidance for your own landscape and to get a sneak peak of what will be available at our Fall Plant Sale! \n\n\n\nInstructor: Robert (Bob) Koons\n\n\n\nBob Koons has been a volunteer with Birmingham Botanical Gardens for nearly 10 years. Applying his background in architecture and love for the environment\, he has helped with multiple spaces such as the Japanese Garden and Kaul Wildflower Garden\, even creating a map of the many native plant species there. Passionate about educating people on plants and landscape design\, he has been leading the Trees and Shrubs volunteer growing group for the spring and fall plant sales since 2019. \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\n \n Members: $35\n |\n Nonmembers: $40\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nBecome a Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\n\n\n\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. Isabelle will highlight native plants that are easy to install and discuss how to create urban spaces that are both beautiful and ecologically functional. \n\n\n\nAs a part of this program the group will explore various spaces where natives are cultivated with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Comfortable shoes are suggested.  \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\nInstructor: Isabelle Bracewell\n\n\n\nIsabelle Bracewell is the Assistant R3 Coordinator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. She has worked as a natural resource preservation specialist for the National Park Service\, a restoration ecologist for several conservation nonprofits\, both in Georgia and Alabama\, and an urban forestry specialist. Isabelle now works to promote conservation education\, landscape-level restoration\, and hunting heritage across the state of Alabama and the Southeastern region. She holds an undergraduate degree from Emory University and a master’s degree in natural resources from Auburn University. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $35\n |\n Nonmembers: $40\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. You will learn about standout plants for spring containers and simple care tips\, then design your own planter using the classic “filler\, thriller\, spiller” approach. Please bring your garden gloves! $35 supply fee included. \n\n\n\nInstructor: Terry Phillips\n\n\n\nTerry Phillips serves as the new horticulturist for Kaul Wildflower Garden. He has since worked at Andy’s Creekside Nursery\, Shoppe\, and Leaf & Petal. These experiences transformed his “plant-blindness” by helping him become knowledgeable and appreciative of plants. “Native flora and ecology are something I care deeply about\, and getting to work in the Kaul Wildflower Garden is definitely a dream job!” he said. \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\n \n Members: $35\n |\n Nonmembers: $40\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. In past years\, Karen chaired the vegetable booth at the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale\, and deems herself a vegetable gardening evangelist. Karen also loves hydrangeas and is the past president of the Alabama Hydrangea Society. Concerns for watering hydrangeas and other plants during drought motivated her to install hose-end irrigation tubing with adjustable emitters to water plants at their base. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $35\n |\n Nonmembers: $40\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
