SUMMARY:Landscape Foundations: Selecting and Siting Trees and Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:Programs & Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLandscaping with Japanese Maples\n\n\n \n \n Instructor\n \n David Doggett\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Adventure Classroom\n \n \n \n\n\n\n Landscaping with trees and woody shrubs requires planning\, patience\, and an understanding of how plants grow over time\, some taking many years to reach their full beauty and impact. Join Bob Koons\, a familiar face both in the Kaul Wildflower Garden and at our plant sales\, as he discusses the selection\, environmental needs\, siting\, planting\, and maintenance of trees and shrubs. \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to bring two or three photos of their yard for small group work. This is a chance to gain inspiration and practical guidance for your own landscape and to get a sneak peak of what will be available at our Fall Plant Sale! \n\n\n\nInstructor: Robert (Bob) Koons\n\n\n\nBob Koons has been a volunteer with Birmingham Botanical Gardens for nearly 10 years. Applying his background in architecture and love for the environment\, he has helped with multiple spaces such as the Japanese Garden and Kaul Wildflower Garden\, even creating a map of the many native plant species there. Passionate about educating people on plants and landscape design\, he has been leading the Trees and Shrubs volunteer growing group for the spring and fall plant sales since 2019. \n\n\n\nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n\n \n Members: $20\n |\n Nonmembers: $25\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nBecome a Member\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\n\n\n\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date. Each participant will take home 3–4 unique planters—no experience needed. \n\n\n\nInstructor: Astrid Jerez \n\n\n\nAstrid Jerez is a botanical and mixed media artist whose work explores the connection between art and living plants. Through her creative practice\, she transforms natural elements into expressive pieces that invite people to bring more greenery and intention into their everyday spaces. \n\n\n\nShe is the founder of Vivatia Plant Care Services\, an interiorscaping business based in Birmingham\, where she designs and installs indoor and outdoor plant environments for homes and businesses—bringing life\, texture\, and balance into every corner. Inspired by the most up-to-date scientific research\, the book studies magnolias\, orchids\, and roses\, as well as fascinating but less well-known flowers such as seagrasses. Through radical genetic flexibility\, plants like these have turned past environmental upheavals into opportunities for renewal. This inventiveness allowed them to build and sustain rain forests\, savannas\, prairies\, and even ocean shores. \n\n\n\n \n Members: $20\n |\n Nonmembers: $25\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Air Layering: Propagating Difficult-To-Root Plants
DESCRIPTION:Programs & Events\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLandscaping with Japanese Maples\n\n\n \n \n Instructor\n \n David Doggett\n \n \n \n Location\n \n \n Adventure Classroom\n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin horticulturist Julia Adams for a hands-on workshop to learn how to propagate plants via air-layering. This method of propagation allows you to multiply difficult-to-root plants during the summer when plants are still in an active growing phase. In this session\, you will learn about the science behind air-layering and practice on plants throughout the Japanese Garden. \n\n\n\nInstructor: Julia Adams\n\n\n\nJulia Adams is our Senior Horticulturist for the Japanese Garden. A graduate of the University of Tennessee\, Julia earned a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management as well as a degree in plant sciences\, concentrating in public horticulture. Previously\, Julia has served as an intern at the Denver Botanical Gardens where she worked closely with the director of the Japanese Garden and the Bonsai Horticulturist. \n\n\n\nThis experience sparked Julia’s interest in Japanese Gardens and their attentive design\, symbolic artistry\, and maintenance. Her role in the Hesler Biology Greenhouses\, as well as volunteering at UT Gardens in Knoxville\, all helped Julia explore her interest and expand her knowledge about this style of gardening. With her extensive knowledge\, Julia performs a variety of tasks to ensure that the Japanese Garden thrives. \n\n\n\nLocation: Japanese Garden \n\n\n\n \n Members: $20\n |\n Nonmembers: $25\n \n \n\n\n\nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
