This two-day introduction to the huge and complicated genus Carex will be an overview of the morphology and biology of sedges, with a view to ease people into the often obscure terminology used to describe sedge parts and give people a familiarity with the group. There will also be an overview of the role some of the unique structures of sedges play in sedge biology and ecology. We will look at some basic identification, as also recognition of some of the common and distinctive species and species groups, as well as some of the new ideas on evolution of sedges. There will be a field component, where people can apply some of what they have learned to living plants. We are also offering an optional field trip on Monday, May 6, to Bibb Count Glades, “The Botanical Lost World,” where we will see many species of Carex, as well as several rare and/or endemic plants.
