Oak Mountain Sandstone Glade Field Trip

Instructor Michelle Reynolds

Join naturalist Michelle Reynolds for a guided hike across the rocky ridges of Double Oak Mountain, dotted with sandstone glades, grassy knolls, longleaf pine forests, thickets and oak groves. Participants will have exclusive access to a section of the park closed to the public.

A glade is an open area where bedrock lies at or near the surface, creating thin, rocky soils that make it difficult for trees and shrubs to take root. These distinctive natural habitats support rare and unique plant communities that have adapted to thrive in these challenging conditions.

We will meet in the Peavine Falls Parking Lot at Oak Mountain State Park for easy access. Wear closed-toed shoes to traverse the sandy, craggy path. Entrance fees to the park are $5 per adult, $2 per senior (ages 62 and up). Pay with cash or card at the gate.

Members: $50 | Nonmembers: $55
