Author Talk: Dale Sievert
Join author and gardener Dale Sievert as he explores the long and fascinating history of stumperies in his book Stumperies: The Afterlife of Trees. The earliest recorded stumperies, or root gardens, emerged during the “Golden Years” of mid-Victorian England, when advancements in industry and technology fueled economic growth, trade, and culture. Although the stump garden craze of Victorian England waned by the end of the nineteenth century, stumperies continued to evolve and in recent decades the form has experienced a remarkable resurgence. The modern stumpery garden is increasingly relevant to contemporary discussions of garden design, horticulture, ecology, and environmental conservation.
