English Landscape Garden

Join Advanced Master Gardener Susan Hagen for an engaging exploration of the 18th-century English Landscape Garden, a style that emerged in artistic opposition to the formality of Baroque design.

This illustrated presentation examines the influential work of architects such as William Kent, Lancelot “Capability” Brown, and Humphry Repton, and highlights iconic landscapes including Rousham, Stowe, and Chatsworth Garden.

Learn how these landscape designers promoted expansive, natural styles that opened the garden to the broader countryside, freeing the borders and expanding the views.

Susan Hagen retired as professor of medieval literature and from serving as associate provost of Birmingham-Southern College in August 2017. Since then, she has focused her energies on her blog, “After Eden,” which investigates the cultural and horticultural significance of gardens. She has also published nature-centered poetry in the collection Shall We Dance? with Antrim House Books. Additionally, as an Advanced Master Gardener, she has been active in giving presentations on native plants, pollinators, and international gardens.
