Moon Tree

Located at the southern edge of the Dunn Formal Rose Garden, this 50-year-old sycamore was grown from seeds that traveled to the moon and back.

Apollo 14

The American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) seeds were sent to the moon in 1971 aboard Apollo 14 as part of a project to study the effects of weightlessness on seed germination. The Gardens’ Moon Tree was planted and dedicated in February 1976 during America’s Bicentennial celebrations.
